National Health Insurance (The Self-Employed Insured)┃2. Eligibility of the Self-Employed Insured www.easylaw.go.kr



Q. Can a foreigner become the self-employed insured of the National Health Insurance?



Foreigners residing in Korea who are not the employee insured become the self-employed insured if they meet both requirements 1 and 2. They have resided continuously in Korea for at least six months or are reasonably expected to do so for a cause falling under any of the following: Acquired permanent resident status Acquired a residence status of non-professional employment (E-9) Acquired a residence status of marriage migrant Acquired a residence status of foreign student or general training under Article 4(3) of the Standard for the Application of National Health Insurance to Long-Term Foreign Resident Nationals and to Foreigners Article 109(3)1 of the National Health Insurance Act; Article 61-2(1) of the Enforcement Rule of the National Health Insurance Act



2. A person to whom any of the following applies: A registered person under Article 6(1)3 of the Resident Registration Act or one who registered domestic residence A registered foreigner with resident status under Attached Table 9 of the Enforcement Rule of the National Health Insurance Act Article 109(3)2 of the National Health Insurance Act; Article 61-2(2) of the Enforcement Rule of the National Health Insurance Act



Foreigners to become the self-employed insured are processed uniformly by the National Health Insurance Service without any reporting required. (Unless a person’s data under Article 96 of the National Health Insurance Act cannot be confirmed) Refer to “National Health Insurance Service (www.nhis.or.kr) – Policy Center – Health Insurance System for Foreigners and Nationals Residing Abroad”
