Q. What is the National Health Insurance System?



What is the National Health Insurance System? A social security system that makes insurance payments to lighten the public’s medical cost burden and enable them to seek necessary medical services



Every Republic of Korea national residing in Korea is a subscriber or dependent of the National Health Insurance, and foreigners who fulfill certain requirements can also be subscribers. Main body of Article 5(1) of the National Health Insurance Act



The following persons, however, are excludedfrom the National Health Insurance subscription.  A medical care assistance beneficiary A person eligible for medical protection, such as a person of distinguished service (unless such a person requested to be eligible for National Health Insurance or a person eligible for National Health Insurance did not request to be excluded from insurance eligibility after becoming eligible for medical protection) Proviso of Article 5(1) of the National Health Insurance Act
