Using Public Transportation

Public Transportation Issues
Kim’s Safe Commute

Question
I commute to work and back home every day by bus.
When I took the bus the other day after work, I fell and injured my back when it came to a sudden stop.
Would I be able to claim medical expenses?

Compensation for Damages
If you suffer bodily or property damage in an accident while commuting by bus, you are generally compensated through the Bus Mutual Aid Association’s claims process.

Once you receive compensation through this process, you are not allowed to file an additional claim for damages.

Compensation for Industrial Accidents
For regular workers, if an accident during commuting causes an injury, illness, disability, or death under any of the following circumstances, it is considered a work-related accident.
An accident that occurs while commuting using a means of transportation provided by the employer or something equivalent under the employer’s control is considereda work-related accident.
Accidents that occur while commuting via the usual route and method are also considered work-related.
